Vacuum technology is one of the principles behind creating high technology products that are helpful in making people’s daily lives easier. This type of technology is present in industries involving water management, waste management, manufacturing, construction, robotics, and more. Turbo pumps use vacuum technology to work and function. They’re able to meet high standards and requirements compared to other vacuum pumps.

What are Turbo Pumps?

Turbo pumps are basically pumps that are driven or operated by a turbine. These pumps have two primary components, which are:

 

  • Rotodynamic pump – This is a type of pump that makes use of a propeller to create a centrifugal force to generate energy. As the propeller turns, it generates velocity to impart energy to a liquid.

 

  • Gas turbine – Gas turbines are also referred to as combustion turbines. It’s an engine that converts natural gases and other liquid fuels into mechanical energy. The energy produced is responsible for producing electrical energy.

 

A turbo pump’s primary purpose is to produce high-pressure fluids that are responsible for feeding the combustion chamber. Combining these components together help create turbo pumps that are able to generate power to operate and fuel machineries, ships, trains, aircrafts, tanks, gas compressors, and other pumps.

Types of Turbo Pumps and How They Work

Turbo pumps are molecular pumps that consist of rotors with turbine-type blades as well as pumping channels. These blades rotate between the corresponding stator blades. Identifying the different types of turbo pumps are essential to understanding how they work. There are two types of turbo pumps. They are:

 

  • Axial-flow Pump – Also referred to as AFP, axial-flow pumps are common types of pumps that consist of a propeller inside a pipe. Pressure is created in an axial-flow pump through the liquid flow over the propeller’s blades. These pumps are heavy-duty and require high volumes of water at low discharge pressures. They are usually applied and installed for pumping water from a variety of sources such as lakes, tanks, rivers, cooling ponds, and oceans.

 

  • Centrifugal Pump – This type of pump uses rotation to create velocity to a fluid or liquid. It then transforms the velocity into flow. Centrifugal pumps work by pumping fluids outward at high speed. This pump is often applied or used in sewage, water, petrochemical pumping, and petroleum.

A Big Part Today’s Technology

Most turbo pumps convert rotational energy from a motor into energy inside a moving liquid or fluid. These pumps are difficult to manufacture and engineer before optimal performance is achieved. Since these pumps are responsible for providing energy and power to large machines, their performance must yield 70% up to 90% efficiency.

 

New and rebuilt turbo pumps are helpful in generating energy for different types of machinery or heavy-duty items that are used in everyday operations. They may be a big part of our technology today, but most people don’t have the time to think and appreciate them.
