How do DC-DC Converters Help Us Operate Efficiently in our Working Sectors?

Power direct from the electricity grid is often unsuitable for the equipment it powers. As a result, power converters such as DC-DC converters are essential. They help to convert this raw power into the right form for customer usage, which in turn allows their electronic equipment to function correctly.

Due to this, it is unsurprising that the global power converter market contains hundreds of thousands of customers, with Dc-DC converter supplier XP Power estimating that the available market is worth £1.5 billion, with around 50 manufacturers competing on a worldwide basis.

What is A DC-DC Converter and How Does It Keep Me Safe?

A DC-DC circuit is an electromechanical device that helps to convert a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage to another one (generally a lower one that’s safe to use).

However, they’re not only used for low voltage applications. Instead, there are a wide variety of power ranges used, right from small mobile devices with small batteries to large industrial applications which require high-voltage power transmissions in order to operate.

They’re commonly used in portable electronic devices, such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets. However, they’re usually present in anything that receives its power primarily from a chargeable battery.

Here, a DC-DC convertor is of high use as these devices contain several sub-circuits that need to be controlled. Each of these often have their own voltage level which, if left unregulated without a DC-DC converter, could cause a malfunction or fire. Each sub-circuit in these devices has its own voltage level, which must be continually regulated. In addition to this, as the battery voltage declines over use and rime, DC to DC converters allow the voltage to be increased if required, which avoids the need for multiple batteries. So not only do they help to keep us safe, but they save space, time and weight, too.

Finally, it should also be noted that DC to DC converters can also be used to regulate output voltage (although there are exceptions to this, such as LED power sources). If you’re interested in the types of circuits and their set-ups that use DC to DC converters, then there’s a great blog here.

To conclude, DC to DC converters are big business. When you look at the number of applications for the converters as well as their safety responsibility, it’s perhaps no wonder why, too. From mobile phones to military grade applications, there are a number of practical and safety uses for DC converters, so think about how they affect you.
